Understanding the Test

What is a Rabies Titer Test?

A Rabies Titer Test — officially the Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titration Test (RNATT) or FAVN test — measures the level of rabies antibodies in your pet's blood after vaccination.

Many countries require laboratory proof that your pet's vaccination produced sufficient immunity (≥ 0.5 IU/mL) before allowing entry. A vaccination certificate alone is not enough.

This test is required for dogs and cats travelling from India, which is classified as a rabies-endemic country by most destination nations.

⚠️ Critical Timing — Start Early

Blood can only be drawn 30 days after rabies vaccination. After a passing result, most countries require an additional 3-month waiting period. Start the process at least 5–6 months before travel.

ℹ️ Passing Threshold

A result of ≥ 0.5 IU/mL is required by almost all countries. If below this, vaccination must be repeated and the test redone after another 30-day wait.

🧬 RNATT vs FAVN — Which Test Does Your Country Need?
🔬
RNATT — Rapid Neutralisation Antibody Test

Performed at government-approved labs in India. Results in 7–14 working days. Accepted by most Asian and Middle Eastern destinations.

🧪
FAVN — Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralisation

Required by EU, UK, USA, Japan, Australia. Blood sample sent to an OIE-accredited lab. Results in 10–21 days. Higher cost due to international courier.

🔖
Microchip — Mandatory First Step

An ISO 11784/11785 compliant 15-digit microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccination. Without this, the titer test result will be invalid for travel.

Step-by-Step: Titer Test for Your Pet

Everything that needs to happen in the correct order — from microchip to boarding the flight.

01
🔖
Microchip Implantation

ISO-compliant 15-digit microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccination. This links all records to your pet and is mandatory for all international travel.

02
💉
Rabies Vaccination

Administer an approved inactivated rabies vaccine after microchipping, given by a licensed veterinarian. Record batch number and date carefully.

03
Wait 30 Days

Blood cannot be drawn until at least 30 days after vaccination. This allows your pet's immune system to develop adequate rabies antibodies.

04
🩸
Blood Sample Collection

A licensed vet draws 3–5 ml of blood. The sample must be stored correctly and dispatched to the approved lab within the specified time window.

05
🧫
Lab Testing & Results

The accredited lab processes the sample and issues an official report. A titre of ≥ 0.5 IU/mL is a pass. Results take 7–21 days depending on test method.

06
✈️
Waiting Period & Travel

Most countries require a 3-month waiting period after a passing result. Use this time to complete the health certificate, export permit, and airline booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Titer Test Questions Answered

No, not for every country. However, the majority of rabies-free or controlled nations — including Australia, UK, all EU countries, Japan, Singapore, and New Zealand — require a valid titer test from India. The USA doesn't universally require it but some states and situations do. Always confirm with our team before making travel plans.

Start at least 5–6 months before your travel date. This accounts for: 30 days after vaccination before blood can be drawn, up to 21 days for test results, and 3 months of mandatory waiting period required by most countries after a passing result. Starting late is the single most common reason pet travel plans get delayed or cancelled.

If the result is below 0.5 IU/mL, the rabies vaccination must be repeated. You then wait another 30 days before a new blood sample can be taken. The full country waiting period restarts from the new passing result date. Petscort ensures your pet's vaccination records are complete before initiating the process to minimise this risk.

Yes — the titer test applies to both dogs and cats (and ferrets in some countries). The process and requirements are identical for both species. Cats must also be microchipped before vaccination for the titer test result to be valid for international travel.

It depends on the airline and your pet's size. Small pets (typically under 8 kg including carrier) may travel in the cabin on certain airlines. Larger dogs must travel as manifest cargo or excess baggage in the aircraft hold. Petscort coordinates with airlines to book the safest option for your pet, and ensures the travel crate meets IATA standards.

In addition to the titer test report, most countries require: a valid vaccination record (rabies and core vaccines), a microchip certificate, a health certificate from a government-authorised veterinarian, an export permit from India's Department of Animal Husbandry, and in some cases an import permit from the destination country. Petscort prepares and verifies all of these as part of our service.

It depends on the destination. Countries like Australia, Singapore, and Japan require mandatory quarantine ranging from 10 to 180 days even with a valid titer test. The EU and UK generally do not require quarantine if all documentation is complete and the titer test waiting period has been observed. Petscort advises you on quarantine rules specific to your destination well in advance.
